Lexington’s Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital is the home of a new University of Kentucky outpatient clinic. Beginning Monday, patients seeking advanced orthopedic and neurological therapies will receive care in the over 19-thousand-foot clinic space. Dr. Susan McDowell is the medical director for rehab service at UK HealthCare.
“Big orthopedic gym here for anything that hurts ya. Neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, arm pain, knee pain..we can help ya take care of that if you don’t need surgery or you had surgery and need some rehab. This is going to be the place to get your services rendered,” said McDowell.
McDowell said the medical technology available at the Cardinal Hill location may help therapy go a little faster. UK HealthCare Enterprise Director for Rehabilitation Services Dean Hamlon said 20 therapists have been hired with plans calling for 35 eventually. He noted every day more technologies assist patients.
Kori Ivanchak led a demonstration Wednesday. She explained the features of the Zero G, an overhead track system with a harness that prevents patients from falling as they practice walking and other physical skills.
“It allows three therapists and three patients to be working at the same time and we can even actually have patients interacting together on the system. Like for example, they could be throwing the ball to each other on the system and practicing their balance that way,” said Ivanchak.
Ivanchak said company officials say the Zero G at Cardinal Hill is the only system in the world that can feature three assistive robots on one track.
