New Travelodge could open in the heart of Bristol

Travelodge already has six venues across Bristol - but now the company wants to open a new one. The hotel chain has written to Bristol City Council to propose a 'joint development partnership'.

The city currently has six Travelodge hotels with a seventh under construction, but the chain wants to bring another to either the city centre or Bristol South. The proposed new hotel is expected to bring around 25 extra jobs to the region.

In the letter sent to the council, Travelodge explains the ‘pivotal role’ the company has played over the last 10 years. UK-wide, the company hopes to open 300 more hotels, which would create 9,000 new jobs.

Chief Property & Development Officer for Travelodge, Steve Bennett, said: “Britain is now a nation of budget travellers, with more of us choosing to stay in budget hotels than any other hotel type and this trend is set to grow, which is why we are looking to expand our UK hotel network with a further 300 hotels. Adding a Travelodge hotel can be a catalyst to attract new businesses to support regeneration, bring vacant buildings back into economic use as well as attracting thousands of new overnight visitors to the area and revitalising High Streets.”

Once the hotel development has been completed, local authorities are given the choice on whether they want to keep owning the building and get rent from it each month or if they wish to sell the property with the hotel chain as the operator.

Steve further explained: “In the current climate, Local Authorities are under extreme pressure to invest in their economy and support regeneration projects. This is why we have written to Bristol Council to offer our support as we have a requirement to open a further Travelodge hotel in the region. This expansion programme could represent a multi-million investment for third party investors and create 25 new jobs. In addition, our research shows that, on average, Travelodge customers will spend at least double their room rate with local businesses during their stay; this can be an annual, multi-million pound boost into each local economy.”
