New traffic lights at dodgy Renfrew junction bring relief to residents after several accidents

New traffic lights have been installed at a dodgy Renfrew crossroads in a bid to address safety concerns.

Council chiefs have put signals in place at the junction of Broadloan and Sandy Road after elected members insisted they were urgently needed.

The junction is close to Renfrew High School and there have been a number of serious incidents in recent years including a fatality.

Drivers often get confused over who has right of way which has left residents at their wit's end with the sound of beeping horns going off day and night.

Traffic lights are also due to be installed where Sandy Road meets Haining Road and Newmains Road in the coming weeks with work expected to be completed by the end of next month.

Councillor John Shaw, who represents Renfrew North and Braehead, said he and fellow SNP elected members had been pushing for the lights to be installed since they were voted onto the council in 2017.

He said people will now feel more confident navigating the junction.

"It's a really busy junction as it's the main route up to Tesco plus Sandy Road is used as one of the main routes off Paisley Road for the town," said Councillor Shaw.

"Drivers can get confused at the crossroads and it can be quite difficult to get through.

"There have been a few accidents and there was a fatality a few years back.

"The problem we have had as councillors is that unless there is an injury, it doesn't get recorded as a serious incident, so if we say this is a really bad junction they will then look at the stats and say we haven't had an accident there in ages.

"A car went onto its roof a year or two ago but thankfully no one was injured so that didn't get recorded.

"We put some funding aside in our budget for road safety improvements and with that, we were able to lobby officers and we're glad we've finally been able to do something about this junction as people have been complaining about it for years."

Many residents who have lived near the crossroads for decades have spoken on social media of their relief at the lights being put up.

Catia Smith, who stays in nearby Nethergreen Wynd, said on Facebook: "I've been dreaming of this since my kids were wee.

"Now they're both grown up and out the house so it's definitely been a long time waiting but I'm so glad they're there now.

"I always go that way to Tesco and there have been so many near misses over the years at that junction. It's a wonder there weren't more accidents."
