New thunderstorm warning for Wales issued by Met Office

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for Wales after days of torrential downpours. Thunderstorms are forecast for the southern part of the country from the afternoon of Thursday, November 3, well into the night.

The yellow thunderstorm warning, which covers the whole south coast of the country is in place from 3pm on Thursday to 23:59pm. The warning has not yet been extended into Friday. The forecaster says that the storms could cause localised disruption in some areas, including flooding and poor driving conditions.

The storm comes after days of heavy rain, which saw some flooding and disruption, more updates on that can be found here. The thunderstorm warning is the latest in a week of adverse weather, with warnings for wind and rain issued earlier in the week.

On Monday night until Tuesday morning a yellow warning for rain was issued which saw parts of the county hit by heavy rain, and on Wednesday a weather warning for wind was issued covering large parts of the country, with wind speeds hitting nearly 60mph in parts.

The Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covers:

  • Bridgend
  • Cardiff
  • Carmarthenshire
  • Neath Port Talbot
  • Pembrokeshire
  • Powys
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf
  • Swansea
  • Vale of Glamorgan

The met office forecast alongside the warning reads: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms will cross southwest Wales and then parts of southwest England during the second half of Thursday. Following heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours, some places may receive an additional 30-40 mm of rain in a few hours which could lead to some surface water flooding, particularly where showers are slow moving.

"Thunderstorms will be mostly limited to coastal areas where lightning and hail may be additional hazards. In exposed spots across southwest Cornwall during the evening there is also the potential for strong wind gusts (50-60 mph) in association with these thunderstorms and showers."

The Met Office says that some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely and that there is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus. The forecaster says there will probably be some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes and some short term loss of power and other services is likely
