Ireland’s capital city Dublin has been ranked the third slowest city in the world to drive in according to new research.
The eye-opening study by tech company Tom Tom looked at 389 cities across 56 countries on six continents and measured their travel time, fuel costs and CO2 emissions, providing free access to city-by-city information to create the Tom Tom traffic index.
To measure this, a team of researchers at the company assessed the time per mile driven and simulated how long it takes to complete a six-mile (approximately 10-kilometre) journey within a city. Furthermore, the researchers created two lists, one looking at the city centre of each city, and another looking at the metropolitan area.

Although the metropolitan area of each city varied, a city centre was defined as a complete road network within a radius of five kilometres around the centre.
London topped the list as the slowest city centre in the world to drive in for 2022, with Londoners on average needing 35 minutes to drive six miles. During rush hour, the average speed in London’s city centre was only nine mph.
Dublin ranked in at number three, just under Bengaluru, located in southern India. According to the report people living in the capital lost the most amount of time to rush hour traffic, with drivers spending a further 27 hours stuck in traffic compared to 2021.
In Dublin, it takes an average of 28 minutes and 30 seconds to drive 10 kilometres.
Looking at the rest of Ireland, Cork came in at number 154 and Limerick at 239.
