Sony showcased a lengthy new Spider-Man 2 trailer during the May State of Play, and while it shows a lot of what to expect from the Marvel game, there’s still no Spider-Man 2 release date. The trailer opens with a lengthy cinematic that eventually reveals the main villain – and it isn’t Venom.
It’s Kraven, an unhinged hunter who first debuted in 1964 and vowed to capture Spider-Man to prove he’s the greatest hunter of them all. Except this time, apparently, he’s also trying to catch a giant lizard monster who’s rampaging through New York City, while Peter Parker is blending in as a villain and has a bit of an angry streak as well.
There’s a lot going on, and while much of the action looks familiar – setpiece chase scenes and lots of banter, for example – it looks like Spider-Man 2 is dipping its toes into a few other genres. One scene starring Miles involves a careful stealth segment, and there’s even a tinge of horror built into some of the game’s environments.
Peter and Miles get plenty of new abilities and handy gadgets as well, including a device that reaches out and ensnares several foes in webs and some Venom-like powers for Peter.
How all this comes together, we’ll eventually find out in fall 2023. Despite the Venom voice actor’s belief that Spider-Man 2 will launch on PS5 in September, Insomniac is still sticking to a general fall release frame.
