Snow and ice warnings issued for UK as London rain finally relents

Londoners may get a breather from the wet conditions that have mired the first part of the year - while much of the rest of the country braces for snow and ice.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for much of the country on Monday and Tuesday as a band of rain and sleet is expected to sweep the country.

One warning covers much of Scotland and runs from 3pm on Monday to 10am on Tuesday.

A second bigger alert covers a huge area of the UK south of the Central Belt of Scotland, through northern England and central and eastern England as far south as East Anglia.

The forecaster has warned motorists and pedestrians in these areas to exercise more caution on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, which may become slippery overnight.

Strong winds have also been forecast along some North Sea coasts later on Monday night and into Tuesday morning, which threaten to worsen conditions in eastern coastal regions.

The Met Office has advised those travelling in these conditions to leave extra time for journeys, stick to treated main roads where possible, and check transport timetables before travelling.

The forecaster warned that this forecast may change and urged the public to stay up to date with conditions.

Good news is on the horizon for Londoners, though, as the capital remains unaffected by the forecaster’s weather warnings.

Winter coats will still be essential on Tuesday morning, as temperatures start at a chilly 3C, but are set to gradually warm up throughout the day, to a high of 7C with sunny intervals.

Midweek in London will see further outbreaks of light rain, with daytime highs hovering between 7C and 9C through Friday.

However, by the weekend thermometers are forecast to climb into double figures, with Saturday and Sunday set to reach a positively balmy 14C.

As weather warnings sweep the rest of the country, the capital looks to be spared from the relentless rain that has battered much of the UK since the start of the year.
