New Scottish independence poll gives Yes side fourth consecutive lead

Scots voters have backed breaking away from the United Kingdom for the fourth independence poll in a row, according to the latest data.

The latest survey conducted by YouGov revealed that when undecided and non-voters are excluded 53 per cent would vote Yes, while 47 per cent would vote to remain in the Union.

A total of 1090 people were asked in the poll which comes following three favourable surveys - by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, Ipsos and Find Out Now - for the pro-independence side.

The new poll comes after the Supreme Court announced Holyrood does not have the power to hold a second vote on the constitution without the consent of Westminster. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wanted to hold a referendum in October next year, however following the judgement she said the SNP would fight the next general election as a de facto referendum.

YouGov's poll shows that if "don't knows" are included then independence sat at 47 per cent while support for staying in the Union was at 42 per cent.

Polling expert Sir John Curtice, from the Strathclyde University, said the most recent survey was the joint highest pro-independence results since August 2020.

He told the Times: "On this evidence, just saying ‘no’ to another ballot does not look like a viable long-term strategy for maintaining public support for the Union."

The SNP's Depute Leader Keith Brown welcomed the new poll saying the "people of Scotland will simply not stand for the Westminster parties’ Trump-like democracy denial".

He added: "It is clear that the people of Scotland want their voice to be heard, and the longer Westminster continues to ignore us, the more support for independence will grow.

"More and more people in Scotland are looking at the utter incompetence of this Tory government, and how the Labour party has abandoned them to adopt a disastrous pro-Brexit policy, and realising that the only way Scotland can escape the long-term damage of Brexit and Westminster control is with independence.

"The people of Scotland will simply not stand for the Westminster parties’ Trump-like democracy denial. The people of Scotland have already voted for a referendum meaning that now is the time for one, and politicians at Westminster must recognise that.

"It’s clear that Scotland can flourish as an independent country in the European Union, and the people of Scotland deserve to have that choice over their future."
