New Scottish crime podcast to re-examine Kirsty Maxwell's unsolved death

A new crime podcast will re-examine the death of West Lothian woman Kirsty Maxwell in a bid to shine a light on the unsolved case.

The 27-year-old, from Livingston, tragically fell to her death in 2017, after she came down from a hotel room balcony on a hen weekend in Benidorm.

The room had been occupied by five British men but despite desperate pleas from her family for answers, a Spanish judge stated there was "no evidence" the group had been involved in the tragedy.

With the full details of what really occurred that night still unclear, a former Scottish detective has announced he will be looking back over the case.

A former senior investigating officer, the Record reports that David Swindle will be putting his 30 years of experience to use in a new crime podcast.

'Swindle's Search For The Truth' will be taking a deep delve into the Maxwell case, as well as other Scottish tragedies such as that of Craig Mallon, who also died abroad.

Craig, from Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire was killed by a single blow outside a nightclub in Spain's party resort, Lloret de Mar in the early hours of May 19, 2012.

The 26-year-old was on his brother, Bryan's stag-do in the Costa Brava town when a group of young men, believed to be French, attacked him and his friends as they left Rockefellers Bar in the early hours.

Despite a number of eyewitness accounts and authorities discovering the group of key witnesses had left their hotel early, local officers were unable to solve the case.

Discussing the new podcast, Swindle said: "This is an unusual concept.

"We're not just speaking about crimes, we will be hoping to get people actively involved and people contributing because some of the cases we speak about are unresolved.

"I hope that people listening to this will be come actively involved and will appreciate and understand what we're bringing.

"It's a new concept for the true crime world."

Promising podcast episodes in different languages, the cases will take listeners to countries including Spain, India, Goa and Mexico where holidaymakers ventured and never came back alive.

His co-host is writer and researcher Kay Page.

She added: "We'll have fascinating inputs from for experts, historians, researchers and multi-lingual experts."

Swindle, who has 'dealt with the most complex and cases you can imagine' laments the lack of support for families of those killed abroad.

He added: "I'm a crime expert and reviewer who brings police experience to help families of victims, mostly who are killed abroad.

"Sadly victims' families do not always get the best support available.

"We try to get the truth and get results."
