New Scone Thistle manager Charlie King sees great potential for club to develop and grow

New Scone Thistle manager Charlie King is excited to help the club grow and sees plenty of potential to drive forward with.

King - whose playing career included time at St Johnstone, Livingston and Brechin City - was officially announced as the new boss at Farquharson Park on Tuesday night.

The Jaggie Nettles currently sit second bottom of the Midlands League and there is a determination to quickly make improvements, while also setting a solid platform for the future.

King, who is local to the area and was most recently in charge of East of Scotland League Premier Division side Tynecastle, said: “I’m really looking forward to it.

“There is a group of young players at this club who we want to keep hold of.

“And there is work to be done between now and the end of the season to make our minds up on certain players and get the best out of them. I know there is a lot of hard work to come.

“This is a proper football club. The people at the club know what they want and I think they are just as excited as I am with the opportunity we have.”

King added: “When I go back 10 years ago or so, when I started up at Brechin Vics, Scone were a very decent team and would be hovering around third or fourth.

“The league structure has changed a bit over the last few years but it is important we make the players who are already here better.

“From what I’ve seen at training so far, there are certainly a lot of decent players at the club.

“We do need to get a wee bit of experience in too and we want to immerse a few good ones who nobody really knows of.

“Looking forward, I do think it is important we see improvement between now and the end of this season before getting a good pre-season in.”

King is keen to get the whole community involved with the club and, such is the nature of the game, realises positive results and an attractive brand of football will help with that.

“We can tap into the community side of it because Scone is thriving at the minute,” King said. “We want to get as many people on board, but ultimately we need to get it right on the park.”

His first game in charge comes on Saturday and against no other than Brechin Vics - the team he started his management career with.

He says the fixture cannot come quick enough.

And he smiled: “What are the chances? I’ll need to get the shinguards and boots looked out.”

King’s management team will include Drew Fleming and Andy McKinnie, while Eric Duff is also continuing his role with the club.

Scone chairman Derek Adam said of the appointment: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Charlie to the club and very much look forward to working alongside him and his team.

“Everyone at the club can only benefit from Charlie’s experience and professionalism. His enthusiasm is contagious and this is an exciting time for everyone involved at the club.”
