Project Hail Mary has debuted to the best box office previews of the year so far, which could put the sci-fi blockbuster on track to become Amazon MGM Studio's biggest movie ever.
Deadline reports that the movie has made over $11 million in previews, beating Scream 7's $7.8 million. As for other original, non-franchise movies, Project Hail Mary has beaten Oppenheimer's preview takings of $10.5 million, F1's $10 million, and Sinners' $4.7 million.
This marks the biggest preview for any Amazon MGM Studios movie – Creed 3 previously held the title with $5.4 million, which went on to bring in a record-breaking opening weekend for the streamer.
As Project Hail Mary has doubled Creed 3's preview takings, it doesn't seem like a giant leap for mankind to guess it might overtake the boxing drama to become Amazon's biggest movie at the box office. Still, now that the movie has opened in theaters worldwide, we'll have to wait and see what the opening weekend (and beyond) holds for Project Hail Mary.
The movie has been a hit with critics, securing the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Gosling title yet with 95% on the review aggregator site. Our own Project Hail Mary review gave the film four stars, with our reviewer praising "stunning visuals" and "a beautifully emotional story" in a "large-scale sci-fi with tons of heart."
Gosling plays scientist Ryland Grace, who wakes up aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. As he pieces the clues together, he realizes he's the sole survivor of a mission to save the world from our dying sun – but can he finish the job alone?
