New route to challenge drinkers on Wales' most famous pub crawl

The legendary Mumbles Mile route is being "redeveloped" as part of plans to help support the hospitality industry and celebrate real ale and cider. Having been unable to operate through the pandemic, the Swansea branch for The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) wanted to revitalise one of the city's long-standing traditions and rite of passage.

Noting the loss of some familiar watering holes from Gower, the mile has been reborn in order to showcase the thriving success of Mumbles with prizes also up for grabs to anyone who can tackle the beast.

The iconic Mumbles Mile has long been recognised as one of the great pub crawls of Wales, once attracting the likes of stag and hen dos to the area with a very simple premise - walk for a mile, and have a pint in each bar along the way, however it wasn't necessarily a mile long.

As time progressed, the Mumbles Mile lost a part of its identity, losing some pubs to the test of time and more recently the coronavirus pandemic. You can read more history about the once famous route here.

However, with businesses now excelling after the pandemic in new ownership and identities - CAMRA has decided to help celebrate their success with a brand new route. Taking place in August, drinkers can take on a brand new route of 10 watering holes with the official route still currently being developed.

"Over the last couple of years, hospitality has really been significantly hit and suffered," Stuart Morgan, branch campaign officer for CAMRA said. "However, things have been taking place in that period and there have been reinvestments and new landlords have entered the area. It has been a blessing in disguise and we we held a meeting for the first time in years and wanted to revitalise the mile again."

Participants will have an opportunity to earn a stamp on an issued Mumbles Mile card from the group at participating pubs. Awards will be granted to anyone able to fill their card and a chance to win a single grand winner prize to be determined by sponsors.

"It will encourage people to use these pubs, drink real ale or cider and should help revitalise the Mumbles Mile," he added.

The official route is still yet to be finalised but is likely to be announced the coming week, you can follow Swansea CAMRA on social media by clicking here. Opportunities for sponsoring the event are also available and welcomed to enquire.
