New restaurant inside Gary Neville's hotel closes after just four months

New restaurant Stock Market Grill, which took over from celebrity chef Tom Kerridge's Bull and Bear in Manchester, has closed - just four months after opening its doors. The restaurant opened inside Manchester United legend Gary Neville's award-winning Stock Exchange Hotel in the city centre.

The hotel issued a statement on Monday morning saying it had taken the decision to "close the doors to Stock Market Grill" with IMMEDIATE effect. It had only opened to the public on March 1 this year.

The restaurant was a first foray into the dining world from the brothers behind Manchester's award-winning Schofield's Bar - Joe and Daniel Schofield - together with wine expert James Brandwood. They already run the hotel’s cocktail bar Sterling in the basement, which will continue to operate.

A statement was released by the Stock Exchange Hotel on Monday morning announcing the shock news. It said: "Stock Exchange Hotel have taken the decision to close the doors to STOCK MARKET GRILL, as of 3rd July 23.

"The restaurant will, however, continue to serve breakfast and in-room dining to all overnight guests.

"In the meantime, the focus will be on STERLING, the premium cocktail bar located in The Vault at the Stock Exchange Hotel. The team are continuing to develop the STERLING concept and it’s offering."

It ended the statement saying: "Further details on Stock Exchange Hotel’s new F&B [food and beverage] concept will be revealed in due course." We have approached the Schofield brothers for further comment.

Joe Schofield said at the time of the launch how much they were looking forward to launching their first city centre restaurant. He said: "This will be our first restaurant venture but we do have 20 years experience in world class restaurants during that time.

He added: "In a nutshell our concept is a British brasserie, championing dishes we love and elevate and refining them with great produce and working with the seasons. To be honest we're just really excited about continuing the legacy of Tom and his team.

"They did a great job and we absolutely love this space and so we're just looking forward to carrying things on."

The restaurant had a mini makeover from the previous Bull and Bear offering from Michelin Star chef Tom Kerridge and his team. The most major change being the somewhat divisive TV screens on the walls which were taken down.

Announcing the news in December, hotel owner Gary said at the time: "I am incredibly excited to be working with Joe, Daniel and James again on the launch of The Stock Market Grill. I know they will bring another world class-brand to the Stock Exchange Hotel and to our city.”

It opened with head chef Joshua Reed-Cooper at the helm, who had previously worked at Michelin-Star restaurant Mana in Manchester. The launch menu featured starters (ranging from £12 to £16) including a steak tartare with a beef fat egg yolk, a bitter chicory salad with sharp Berkswell cheese, while mains included an ex-dairy cow rib eye steak priced at a robust £55 and pressed chips for £7.
