New research shows northerners are charged more council tax than those in the south

It has recently been revealed that northern homeowners are hit with inflated council tax bills when compared to the south - despite property prices being around a third of the price of those in the capital.

A new probe by The Times claims that bills are in excess of 20 per cent higher in the north of England than they are in London, sparking fears that the north/south divide is growing and that those further up the country are getting a botched deal from the current Tory Government.

Research claims that the average Band D bill in London this year sits at a figure of £1,696, compared with £2,060 in the north of England.
