New rail strike dates announced and what it means for Glasgow train stations

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) have announced more strike dates in the run-up to Christmas, as travellers face more disruption.

Industrial action will be held across four 48-hour periods on December 13, 14 16 and 17, and January 3, 4, 6 and 7 January. This news comes as disputes continue between the company and union over pay, working conditions and job security.

Many rail services will be affected due to this, including services running out of Glasgow's train stations. Read on below to find out more about what services will be affected.

Who is taking part in the rail strikes?

More than 40,000 RMT members are expected to take part, the union said, after its bosses held a meeting on Tuesday to decide on the latest dates.

The RMT said there would also be an overtime ban from December 18 until January 2. This news means that the union will be taking industrial action for four weeks in total.

The strikes not only include conductors and drivers, but signalling staff too. This means that it is likely that only a small minority of services will run on main lines, while smaller branches will have no trains at all.

Separately, the Aslef union, which represents drivers, is holding another strike on Saturday 26 November in a dispute over pay. It affects 12 train companies.

Which Glasgow services will be affected?

ScotRail have confirmed in a statement that the strikes "will cause disruption to ScotRail services, as Network Rail Scotland signallers and maintenance staff, who are in safety-critical roles, will be on strike."

However, they have said: "At the moment, we're working through our timetable plans for the strike days and what this means for ScotRail services."

It is likely that the following services will be impacted in some way by the strikes:

  • Glasgow (Any Station) to Edinburgh Waverley via Bathgate
  • Glasgow Central to Shotts
  • Glasgow Queen Street to Dundee
  • Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen

  • Glasgow Queen Street to Falkirk Grahamston
