New prime minister Andy Burnham pledges ‘resolute’ support for Ukraine

  • Andy Burnham has become the new prime minister, pledging that the UK's support for Ukraine would remain "resolute" under his leadership.
  • He indicated that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky would be one of the first foreign leaders he would speak to.
  • Burnham, who has previously worked with Ukrainian mayors, told broadcasters: “President Zelensky will be left in no doubt whatsoever that Britain’s support is steadfast. It is resolute. It will be there for him and I will be there for him personally too.”
  • In his inaugural speech, he promised to give the public greater control over "life's essentials."
  • His immediate domestic pledges included addressing the cost-of-living crisis and committing to "end rough sleeping in our country."
