A vacant Cardiff building is set to get a new lease of life as a pop-up family history café this spring. Family history website Findmypast has selected a vacant building on Tudor Street in the Riverside area of the city to house a family history pop-up café as part of a UK-wide project.
The family history platform announced that they are trialling a small number of pop-up shops on 20 UK high streets, with Tudor Street being among them. Both experienced family history researchers and those keen to find out more about their family tree will be welcomed to the pop-up, dubbed 'Findmypasty'.
Touch screens will be installed across the café with free access to Findmypast’s hint and tips content and tree building software to help users find out more about their family history. The website also has access to millions of Welsh records and historical newspapers for people to browse.

There will also be free WiFi and power points for those who wish to bring along their own laptops. Playing on their name, the pop-up shops will serve traditional pasties (meat, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan), alongside Fairtrade coffee and a selection of teas.
Dogs are also welcome, with the cafes providing them with water and treats. Opening in May, the pop-up will form part of a three-month trial. Mary McKee, Head of Content Publishing Operations at Findmypast, said: “This is an exciting new venture for Findmypast and we can’t wait to see if this trial will be a success. The Findmypasty pop-up shops will give even more people the chance to discover their ancestors’ stories to help shape their future.
“We’ve chosen this area of Cardiff for its rich and colourful history, and we hope those surroundings will inspire people to delve into our records. I’d encourage everyone in the local area to pop by for a spot of lunch and bring along your family history research – it's the perfect way to spend an afternoon. I heartily recommend the vegetarian option: it’s a delight.”
