New park in Oldland Common could have cherry blossom avenue and orchard

A new public park planned for South Gloucestershire could include an orchard, wildflower meadow and an avenue lined with cherry trees. More details have been published about Jubilee Park, which would transform the former Warmley Pitch and Putt course in Cadbury Heath.

According to South Gloucestershire Council, there would also be a garden of reflection in the form of a woodland arboretum, to act as "a quiet place to sit and remember loved ones". The authority is currently asking for feedback on the proposal, with a consultation open until December 19.

It is also suggesting that one acre of the park should be taken up by a traditional orchard with apple, pear, cherry and other fruit trees. The space would be fenced off and kept dog-free, with a meadow pasture except for mown grass paths.

A council spokesperson said: "We have developed initial plans and designs for the new park and would now like your feedback to help us deliver an inviting, inspiring and safe space, which enhances our local environment. A place where you want to spend time.

"We want the park to be a lasting legacy for the area which brings the community together and is a fitting tribute to HRH Queen Elizabeth II. So, it’s important that we hear from everyone; young and old, individuals and community organisations."

The biodiversity-focused park was announced to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 year reign as monarch, with the location chosen by members of the public after three options were shortlisted. Earlier in the year £500,000 was allocated to fund the park.

Oldland Parish Council and the Common Connections Project have been working with South Gloucestershire Council to develop the plans, and now people in the local area are being asked to have their say via an online survey. When locations were being considered earlier this year, the council's report said: "Warmley former pitch and putt course [could be] a large public open space park that has potential to improve for community use and wildlife benefit.

"Through careful design and input from partner organisations, such as the Police Crime Reduction Team, the improvement of this site could help to reduce some of the antisocial behaviour issues in this area." It noted the site had a "history of anti-social behaviour" and "ongoing issues with unauthorised motorbike use".

Jubilee is not the only new public park planned for the district - the huge new Brabazon Park recently secured planning permission. The green space is part of the massive new neighbourhood under construction at Filton Airfield on the Bristol Arena site.

It will span some 15 acres and is said to be the largest new urban public park in the South West for over 50 years, equivalent in size to Bristol’s Castle Park and also featuring a 2.5 acre lake.
