Bourbon Street, located in the heart of New Orleans, is a popular destination known for its vibrant nightlife and bustling atmosphere. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and visitors, the city has implemented various security features in the area.

One of the key security measures is the use of mechanical barricades. Following the tragic vehicle ramming attack in Nice, France, in July 2016, New Orleans installed steel mechanical barricades in the French Quarter. These barricades are designed to move into position to block off vehicle access when needed. Additionally, police utilize wooden and steel barricades, as well as police vehicles, to restrict road access during specific times.

Another recent development is the installation of new removable bollards along several blocks of Bourbon Street. These stainless-steel bollards are designed to replace older ones and can be easily removed to allow vehicle access when the street is open to traffic. The city stated that these removable bollards will help in closing the street to cars during pedestrian-only times, enhancing safety for those enjoying the area.

Construction of the new removable bollards began in November and is expected to continue through February. The initiative aims to enhance security measures in the area and provide a safer environment for both locals and tourists frequenting Bourbon Street.
