The cast is complete with the latest Octopath Traveler 2 trailer, as Square Enix gears up for the RPG’s upcoming release by introducing us to a talking lion and the remaining heroes. First up is Ochette, a beastling and a hunter from the southern seas. Word reaches her peaceful clan of an impending disaster, so Ochette departs in a bid to find the beasts of legend and stave off the Night of the Scarlet Moon.
She’s not alone in her travels. Ochette’s companions include the talking lion Juvah, who’s training Ochette to one day lead the island in his stead, along with Akala the jackal and Mahima the owl. Ochette’s special ability lets her capture monsters and either summon them in battle or do something slightly less palatable and transform them into useful items. Ochette’s monster summons can help offset her weaknesses in battle.
The hunter can also sic one of her monsters on townspeople and challenge them to battle in the hope of knocking them out and removing obstacles. If she loses, her reputation understandably takes a hit.
The final hero is Castti, Octopath 2’s resident apothecary and amnesiac. Her story begins in the Harborlands, where she wakes up with an apothecary’s kit and the vague notion that she must accomplish a task of great importance.
Castti doesn’t remember her friends or family, but her kindness and determination to help those in need soon draws in new friends. She can use her connections to learn information from townspeople and help soothe those troubled by illness. In battle, she brews potions that can heal and harm in equal measure, sometimes with surprise effects.
Square Enix also briefly detailed some changes to the game’s structure compared to the first Octopath. Character stories will vary depending on your choices – which objective you pursue, for example, or which companion you bring along. You can also tackle side stories in several different ways depending on whose path actions are open to you.
Octopath Traveler 2 releases Feb. 24, 2023, for PS4 and PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
