New Northern Ireland away kit a tribute to Belfast icons but fans aren't pleased

After days of leaks and online commentary by supporters, the new Northern Ireland away kit was launched today by adidas.

The kit will be worn by the senior men’s team during next year’s qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2024.

Northern Ireland international players are expected to wear it for the first time in the upcoming UEFA Nations League game against Greece in Athens on 27 September.

Adidas explained the new-look Northern Ireland away kit showcases a brand new design with an EQT (Equipment Series) yellow colour palette to stand out in the crowd.

It also said the design pays tribute to two of the historic towering icons of the Belfast skyline – the Harland and Wolff gantry cranes Samson and Goliath.

Fans have been giving their take on the jersey since images were leaked online at the same time as the home kit was launched last week.

Opinion was divided on the home kit but this away rig seems to have united fans - and not in a good way. The jersey is very similar to one worn by Scotland in recent years but, whatever the inspiration, Northern Ireland fans on social media are not happy.

"Surely a quick message to the amalgamation or supporters asking do think a bright yellow kit which we’ve never done before is a good idea? Shambles it’s so bad," replied Timmy Morrison.

The Shankill GAWA account on Twitter commented: "Not seen a single positive comment about it, massive own goal."

"You really didn't read the room over the weekend did you? Absolutely horrendous top," stated Ross McKenzie.

Jordan Moreland said simply: "The worst kit Northern Ireland have ever had."

Rather harshly, Michael Thompson quipped: "Yellow kit to match our yellow performances."

"We are not Brazil, we are Norn Iron," joked Johnny Gallagher of the kit colour.

The Gareth_Cgar account posted: "You'd need those cranes to lift people's hearts/emotions after seeing the top, it's possibly the worst one yous have ever inflicted on us."

But Jim Stephens said: "All this complaining about the new kit but just watch how many people will buy them."

The Irish FA press release also states that the kit features Aeroready technology which allows players to stay dry in the heat of play and perform at the highest level.

It will be sold through JD, the Irish Football Association’s retail partner.
