Recently, the Albuquerque Police Department's mounted unit was involved in a pursuit of a suspected shoplifter, as captured in bodycam footage released on March 20. The incident unfolded when officers heard about a commotion related to a robbery at a Walgreens location.
The suspect, identified as Mark Chacon, 30, allegedly stole merchandise worth $230 from the store. Chacon was later charged with eluding/evading police on foot, shoplifting, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
In the video, a mounted officer can be seen approaching the drugstore on horseback as a woman urges, 'Go get him! Go get him!' Upon confirming the theft, the officer swiftly intervenes, shouting, 'Stop! Albuquerque police! You are being detained!'
As the pursuit unfolds, the suspect, visibly exhausted, makes a risky move by running slowly into moving traffic. The officer on horseback follows suit, prompting vehicles on the road to slow down in response to the unusual scene. Fortunately, Chacon retreats back to the sidewalk before any accidents occur.
However, the chase continues as two other officers on horseback corner the suspect, demanding him to get on the ground and surrender. After a brief standoff, Chacon eventually complies and is taken into custody, handcuffed by the officers.
This peculiar incident highlights the unique challenges faced by law enforcement officers in pursuing suspects, showcasing the versatility and effectiveness of utilizing mounted units in urban settings. The bodycam footage provides a firsthand glimpse into the dynamic nature of police work and the lengths officers go to ensure public safety.
