New Merthyr venue granted licence for alcohol, music and sports events

A new Merthyr Tydfil venue has been granted a licence to be able to host live music, show films, put on plays and hold sporting events. A new premises licence application has been approved for Clwb Crown in Webster House on Dynevor Street.

International Crown Events Ltd made the application, which was considered by the council’s statutory licensing committee on Thursday, September 1. The application said it is for an arts centre with live music, events, a conference centre, a wine bar, tapas, a bistro and a community hub.

It proposes that it be allowed to show films, have indoor sporting events, host plays and have boxing or wrestling entertainment. It is also applying to be able to play live and recorded music, hold dance performances, provide late night refreshment and sell alcohol.

It has been granted a licence to open from 6am to 2.30am from Monday to Sunday and hold performances of plays, films, boxing or wrestling and play recorded music and live music outdoors from 9am to 9.30pm. It will be allowed to serve food outdoors from 11pm until midnight each day and supply alcohol outdoors in outdoor area A (the restaurant area) from 10am to 11pm and outdoor area B (the live music area) from 10am to 10.30pm.

Recorded music will be able to be played indoors from 9am to 1am from Monday to Thursday, from 9am to 2am on Friday and Saturday and from 9am to 12.30am on Sunday. Performances of plays, films, boxing or wrestling and sporting events indoors will be allowed from 9am until midnight and live music indoors will be allowed from 9am to 1am.

The supply of alcohol indoors will be allowed from 10am to 1am from Monday to Thursday, from 10am to 2am on Friday and Saturday and from 10am to 1.30am on Sunday. All of the above will include one hour extra on Sundays before bank holidays, on Christmas Eve, on Boxing Day, on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day.

The licensing department arranged for a mediation meeting to take place with all parties on August 9 and after this the applicant, the environmental health department and the police all provided amended proposed hours but the above hours are what the committee has decided on. Conditions around having a duty manager, CCTV, door staff, signs, an incident log, risk assessments, monitoring of all areas and drinks in non glass cups during certain major sporting events are all included in the licence.

As are conditions around having all drinks that are taken off the premises placed in plastic receptacles, fencing, a dispersal policy, no entry or re-entry after midnight for customers, the challenge 25 scheme, minimising noise are included in the licence, no seating in smoking areas and no glass bottles being moved or deposited outside between 8pm and 7am.
