New Mersey Ferry, gunman 'emerged from bushes' and man dies after being hit by bus

These are the latest Liverpool ECHO headlines this morning.

New Mersey Ferry to be built for first time in 60 years

A new Mersey Ferry is to be built for the first time in 60 years.

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram has commissioned the multimillion project to "ensure that the iconic Ferry Cross the Mersey will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.”

It is expected that the state-of-the-art new vessel will be constructed at the historic Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead, supporting jobs, apprenticeships and development opportunities for the region.

As well as the new vessel, extensive upgrade works will be carried out to one of the existing ferries.

Mayor Rotheram said: “The Mersey Ferries are not only a vital transport link between communities in the Liverpool City Region, they're also an important part of our identity.

"They’re well-loved by both residents and tourists alike, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to our area each year. But, as the current vessels are older than the Gerry and the Pacemakers song that helped make them world famous, they are becoming harder and harder to maintain and definitely in need of an upgrade." Gunman 'emerged from bushes' and shot two men at bonfire event

A gunman emerged from bushes in an area of parkland and shot two men in the legs at a community bonfire event.

Most residents around Broad Hey, Litherland, did not hear gunshots ringing out due to the frequent bangs of fireworks on Saturday evening, although it is unclear whether the gunman deliberately chose Bonfire Night as a cover for his attack.

Emergency services attended the scene at 11.20pm and the two victims were rushed to hospital with serious leg wounds, although their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The shooting was the second eruption of gun violence inside a week, after grandmother-of-five Jackie Rutter was killed as she stood at the doorway of her home in Meadowbank Road, Moreton, on Sunday October 30. Ms Rutter's death was the first firearms related death in Merseyside since the fatal shooting of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel on August 22.

Today residents around the scene of the shooting said the gunman was believed to have "come out of the bushes" of the parkland and approached two men, who were standing around the remains of the bonfire. Read more here.
