A new market in Caerphillly built from shipping containers has revealed its brand identity.
The Welsh Government has committed to providing 58% of the project's cost with a grant of £2.09m and loan of £600,000 from its Transforming Towns programme . The remainder of the funding will come from the local council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The project will be known as Ffos (moat in English) Caerffili.
The first project in Caerphilly County Borough Council’s 2035 regeneration masterplan, Ffos Caerffili will provide 28 units for food and drink operators, independent shops and workspaces. It will also feature an external terrace allowing for outdoor dining, music concerts and events.
The council is currently in discussions with a contractor, which once confirmed will see work starting either in May or June. The market, on Cardiff Road, is expected to be completed in October or November.
Deputy leader of the council, James Pritchard, said: “Ffos Caerffili will be a place that celebrates the spirit of small businesses and local traders.
“We’re all really excited to see the Caerphilly 2035 project begin to come to life and our latest CGIs share our vision for the look and feel for the market. The realisation of Ffos Caerffili will provide a place for our citizens to meet, shop and work, while building more reasons to visit the town.”
Welsh Government Minister for Climate Change, Julie James, said: “Through our Transforming Towns programme, we are providing £100m between 2022 and 2025 to further support the economic and social recovery of our town and city centres across Wales and our town centre first policy, embedded in Wales’ national development plan Future Wales, means that town and city centre sites should be the first consideration for all decisions on the location of workplaces and services.”
The council has a live tendering process to appoint a market operator. Once confirmed rents for the new market will be published.
