Supermarket giant Lidl has opened its doors at a prime site in Broadmead this week. The new store opened on the corner of Union Street in the city centre on Thursday (September 8) to a queue of shoppers at 7am.
The new, modern store has created around 30 new jobs for the local community and includes an in-store bakery as well as self-service checkouts. It marks the supermarket's 16th store in the Bristol area.
Lidl first acquired the site in November 2020 when clothing store H&M confirmed it would not be reopening in the midst of the pandemic, but work to convert the store has taken a while since. The supermarket sign emerged last month affixed onto the former 1930s cinema building, which is right opposite the city centre's Tesco store.

Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Glen Stidever, commented: “We have long been committed to investing significantly in Bristol, ensuring as many people as possible have access to our high quality and affordable produce. We are therefore delighted to open our 16th store right in the heart of the city and welcome everyone into our new supermarket.
"We have received overwhelming support from local residents, and we would like to thank everyone who has played a part in delivering this new store. We now look forward to serving our multi-award winning products to even more of the local community.”
Vivienne Kennedy, head of Broadmead BID, previously told BristolLive that they believe it's going to be a great addition to Bristol Shopping Quarter, where the retail offer continues to evolve to meet today’s consumer needs.
The new supermarket forms part of the company's ongoing £1.3billion investment across the UK in 2021 and 2022. It is currently the sixth largest supermarket chain in the country.
The budget retailer's opening times for the city centre site are between 7am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am–4pm on Sunday.
