New Lidl in Bestwood takes step forward as plans submitted

Plans have now been submitted for a new supermarket in Nottingham. A proposal has been put forward for a new Lidl to open in Bestwood, on the former Chronos Richardson works off Arnold Road and Belconnen Road.

It is proposed that the store will be open between 8am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and for any six hours between 10am to 6pm on Sundays. A planning application for an associated residential development has also been submitted, which would bring 62 homes to the area.

The proposed Lidl store, according to developers, has been designed to create a "great shopping experience" for its customers. They have said the store would benefit from wider aisles, baby changing facilities, longer tills, a customer toilet and an "excellent range" of products for customers.

The company says it would generate up to 40 full time jobs for local people. Typical new roles created will include store manager, deputy manager, check out staff, warehouse staff, and Lidl have said that his would deliver around £2 million to the local economy.

The car park will provide 101 standard parking spaces, six disabled spaces, nine parent and child spaces, as well as four spaces equipped with electric vehicle charging points. There will be nine Sheffield cycle hoops provided beneath the store canopy providing space for 18 cycles to be parked in a dry location.

Lidl and MyPad, who are responsible for the resident aspect of the plans, had previously launched a consultation on the project before plans were submitted. Lidl’s Regional Head of Property, Dominic Bryan, said: “We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening a new Lidl store in Bestwood and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce which shoppers across the country have come to love.

"We’re also excited to be working alongside an experienced, respected local housing provider like MyPad on the wider proposals for the site. Our plans are set to create up to 40 jobs which would be fantastic for the local community, and we hope that as many people as possible are able to join us for this 'virtual' public consultation. We look forward to sharing and discussing our plans with everyone.”

Tom Spink, director at MyPad, said: “It’s great to be working with Lidl, arguably the most popular supermarket in the country right now, on the proposals for a new store and homes in Bestwood. This project will revitalise a key local site, delivering new houses and apartments, including affordable properties, at a time when people are looking to move somewhere new more than ever before.

“We’re really proud of the housing developments we’ve worked on in the past and are committed to creating homes – communities really - that we ourselves would like to live in. The proposals also represent an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into a site that has been left disused for more than ten years, ensuring it once again plays an important role in the local area.

“We’re really keen to hear what people living near the site make of our plans and would encourage anyone with a view to have their say by visiting our consultation website and completing the online feedback form.” The application is currently pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
