Retail workers will be better protected from abuse under new legislation that has come into force.
The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act has introduced tougher penalties against customers who attack shop workers following a rise in abuse during the pandemic.
The legislation was given royal assent on 28 April. Under it, abuse against individuals who serve the public has become an aggravated offence.
