New Jack Harrison squad number hint as Leeds United importance underlined

Leeds United winger Jack Harrison could be set to ditch the number 22 shirt ahead of the upcoming Premier League season in favour of the number 11.

Harrison had previously worn the number 22 for the last four seasons since his arrival at Elland Road.

But in the Whites' final pre-season game against Cagliari, Harrison donned number 11 which was previously worn in the Premier League by the late Gary Speed and it was vacated this summer when Tyler Roberts departed to join QPR on loan.

A new number just a week before Leeds take on Wolves at Elland Road seems to hint the Whites will be keeping Harrison around for the foreseeable future. There have been heavy transfer links to Newcastle United this summer, but they are unwilling to meet Leeds' £35m asking price for Harrison.

Since their promotion back to the Premier League in 2020, there can be no doubt Harrison has been one of Leeds' best performers. After the departures Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha this summer, losing the 25-year-old would certainly be a bitter blow to the Whites hopes this season.

Some outside of Leeds might balk at the £35m price tag, but the reality is Harrison is a proven Premier League quality player who could still get better. Of course, that fee might be slightly inflated - but the £35m price tag is reflective of Harrison's value to Leeds.

Last season saw Leeds hit with masses of injuries which hindered their attack. With Patrick Bamford now fully fit, and the additions of Luis Sinisterra and Brenden Aaronson this summer, there's every chance that Harrison could be set for a huge campaign this term.
