Images have been released of how a Nottinghamshire bypass could look like after planned improvements. National Highways are proposing to widen the A46 around Newark-on-Trent into a 6.5km dual carriageway to alleviate worsening congestion for drivers.
They said congestion on the current single carriageway section of the A46 means journeys are unreliable and take longer than they should. As part of a consultation on the scheme which ends on December 12, an artist's impression of what the improved road could look like in 2037 has been released.
The proposals for the design include a flyover junction at Cattle Market with the A46 elevated to pass over the roundabout, which will separate through traffic from local traffic to improve safety for all road users. It is also proposed that the Winthorpe roundabout is enlarged to a five arm roundabout with traffic lights to connect the new link, and for traffic lights to be added to the Farndon junction to improve the flow of traffic during peak hours.
Other changes include a new single lane carriageway between Friendly Farmer and Winthorpe roundabouts providing links to the A17, A1 and Newark. A short section of new dual carriageway over the A1, including slip roads to Brownhills roundabout and a new bridge to the north of the existing A46 bridge over the A1 are also planned.
There has been concerns raised previously over the bypass, but many residents now look forward to the improvement to the area, with work expected to begin in 2025. The completed project may be different to the current visualisations.
