New homes built on old Nottinghamshire pub site known as 'Bruno'

Carlton has ‘potential’, local residents agree as the demolition of an old pub progresses. Many said they feel like new houses are a positive thing for the area.

An old pub site, the Earl of Chesterfield located on the corner of Carlton Hill, is currently undergoing a huge transformation as work progressing to build a new housing development. The new site will consist of 23 supported living one-bed flats built by MyPad Ltd.

Local residents have shared their views in relation to the transformation of the site. Hotel housekeeper Sandra Jacobs, 45 of Carlton, said: “The houses look great. Hopefully it will attract people to Carlton because Carlton has potential.

“Here, we can’t complain that we don’t have any shops, we do and these houses look nice and modern, I’ve watched them be constructed from the start.”

The Earl of Chesterfield was demolished back in 2017. When the pub was demolished people then called the site an ‘eyesore.’

Eleanor Kelly, 30 said: “It was a big bit of land so I’m happy to see something has been done with it, I’m glad it’s not another pub, I’d rather see houses.”

The full-time mum continued: “More people mean more business for the shops and I assume there’s parking there so there’s nothing really for other people to complain about.”

Local resident Richard, who is now retired has lived in Carlton since the 70s, said he was a regular at the Earl of Chesterfield.

He welcomes the new houses for the area, and said: “It was an old traditional pub. “Carlton is up and coming. Years ago, people used to call the pub ‘Bruno’ ; they'd say ‘I’m going to Bruno.’

“The houses look nice, especially the one on the corner. This used to be one of the best pubs in Carlton.”

Joel Davidson, 29 said: “Why not build houses there? Carlton already has a superstore and other shops, I don’t see why you wouldn’t build houses there. Hopefully, new houses will boost businesses, they’re being built right next to a bus stop so transport links should be fine too.”

The Earl of Chesterfield Site, being built by MyPad Ltd, has been awarded The Bricks Site Recognition Award by LABC Warranty, for its standards of workmanship and management of the site.

Local resident Joan Wilson, 69 from Carlton added: “People called it ‘Bruno.’ It was a good pub but it was time to go. My only criticism is that you’ve got such a nice, new, modern building across from Carlton Square which is the opposite but this is the right place for houses.”
