New Highway Code rules: Bristol driver says 'I'm going to hurt people' in viral TikTok video

A Bristol driver caused outrage on TikTok after saying she was going hurt people due to the new Highway Code.

In a shocking video Chantelle Bradd, a Bristol entrepreneur, says: "I am going to be responsible for hitting f****** Maisie with her little helmet going to school. I’m going to tw** her off her bike in the morning because of this.”

Chantelle slams the new rules that give cyclists priority on the roads in the viral video, saying: "People are gonna get hurt. I'm going to hurt people".

The reaction has been swift and damning online, with even Jeremy Vine intervening in the row to say that her car keys should be taken away from her.

In the video, much of which was said through laughter, Chantelle Bradd, 30, says: "So if I didn't believe in the government trying to depopulate us, I f****** do now. Have you seen the new Highway Code rules for people on bikes?

"I'm a new driver, so I don't even know how I'm gonna deal with driving through the centre of Bristol or anything like that because bikes now can be on either side of you and if they need to turn a corner, you've got to give way to them, so you need to be aware as f*** all the time. Make sure you're looking in your mirrors.

"They don't need to use the cycle lanes that our councils have spent f****** tens, hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of pounds on; they can opt to be in the centre of the f******* road instead. They've got to ride two abreast in the middle of the road, so they're definitely going to be making you late for f******* work in the morning, and I just think: why? Why have you done this?

"People are gonna get hurt. I am gonna hurt people. I am going to be responsible for hitting f****** Maisie with her little helmet going to school. I’m going to tw** her off her bike in the morning because of this. Why?!"

Reaction to the video has not been supportive, with many slamming her comments. Bristol journalist and avid cyclist, Martin Booth, tweeted: "As someone who cycles to school every day with two children, the attitude of this Bristol driver makes me so angry."

Twitter user @MrSanity wrote: "She lives in the same town as me. I cycle on the roads. I'm glad I have a head-cam......."

Owain had a strong reaction to her comment that "you need to be aware as f*** all the time", saying: "Correct. Did your instructor not put it that bluntly?"

@Dublin_Suzy wrote: "Driver realises that she's supposed to be using her mirrors and being aware of her surroundings for the first time".

The angry reaction included avid cyclist and TV presenter Jeremy Vine, who wrote: "If you know this young woman, it's very important that you remove her car keys until her irrational anger about the new Highway Code subsides"

In response to Mr Vine in a video yesterday, Ms Bradd made clear that she was not being serious, that she does not want to "t*** Maisie off her bike when I'm driving" and accused Mr Vine of wanting to "incite hate" towards her because of her outspoken views on Covid-19.

She added that she was "making a joke" about hitting people on the road, and added that she did not have a driving license at the time of recording having failed her test in 2020 and has had more lessons since. She has another test booked for this Thursday, she said in a comment.

What are the Highway Code changes?

All motorists are being urged to become familiar with the new changes, which are aimed at improving road safety for people walking, cycling and riding horses.

It follows a public consultation on a review of The Highway Code, which was carried out between July and October 2020 to look at improving road safety.

Under the new rules, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders will have priority over larger vehicles.

HGVs, buses, vans, taxis and cars are all going to be subject to a new road hierarchy that gives the highest priority to those considered most at risk.

Cyclists are also affected by some changes, which have been designed to improve their safety.

One of the changes will require cyclists to ride in the centre of a lane on quieter roads, in slow-moving traffic and on the approach to junctions.
