A New Hampshire resident has passed away after testing positive for the eastern equine encephalitis virus, a mosquito-borne infection, according to state health authorities. This marks the first reported case of the virus in the state in decades, as confirmed by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday.
The individual, a resident of Hampstead, was identified only as an adult by the department. They had been hospitalized due to severe central nervous system symptoms associated with the infection.
In 2014, there were three reported cases of the eastern equine encephalitis virus in humans in New Hampshire, with two of those cases resulting in fatalities. The recent fatality underscores the seriousness of this rare but potentially deadly virus transmitted by mosquitoes.
