New Glasgow nursery and community centre to be built as plans lodged

Plans to build a new community centre and nursery in Milton with a play area outside have been revealed.

Glasgow City Council’s education department has applied for planning permission to construct the hub, which is to offer a home to Scaraway nursery and the North United Communities organisation.

The vacant site formerly housed the Glasgow School for the Deaf, which was demolished in the 1990s. The new nursery would boast four playrooms and a dining area among other rooms to cater for 95 children with its own space for children outside with doors leading from classes.

Support group North United Communities is to also share the building as its existing base in Ruchill is not fit for purpose according to council planning documents.

A dedicated office space and general purpose rooms will be provided for the organisation as well as a large hall and kitchen space available for use.

Based at a site beside the streets of Shapinsay, Stornoway, Scaraway and Egilsay, there is also to be community space for potentially making a garden.

A design statement said: “The project vision is to deliver an exemplar facility for the community of Milton. The building should aspire to become the new heart of the community. The spaces within should provide a stimulating and supportive environment which caters for the needs of both groups and individuals.”

It added: “The new Milton Community Hub will co-locate Scaraway nursery school and the North United Communities group. The building should be considered as a holistic facility which as well as providing each user group with their own required accommodation, offers the opportunity for a shared learning environment both internally and externally through carefully considered space planning.”

The planning application is being considered by the council.
