New Galloway's Scottish Alternative Games makes long-awaited return

The Scottish Alternative Games makes its long-awaited return this year.

First held in Parton in 1977, this year marks the 20th games since the fun moved to New Galloway after the pandemic put paid to the events in 2020 and 2021.

All the traditional events will be held, with the highlight the Gird ‘n’ Cleek World Championship.

Reigning champion Arthur Harfield will finally get the chance to defend the title he won in 2019 – although he has demonstrated his skills since then when Susan Calman visited New Galloway for her Secret Scotland series.

There will also be hurlin’ the curlin’ stane, tossing the sheaf, tractor pull and snail racing.

And to mark the Commonwealth Games being held in Birmingham, there will be a mini version including the quad bike pull, super soaker skittles and haggis hurlin’.

Other attractions include music, entertainment, a classic car show, a barbecue and bar. All events can be entered on the day with equipment.

It all starts at 2pm on Sunday in New Galloway Park.
