New Friday night market to be trialled in Phibsborough this summer

A brand new night market is to be trialled in Phibsborough by Dublin City Council this summer.

The market will take place on Friday nights and is expected to feature contributions from local businesses. Set to take place in Royal Canal Bank Park near Blessington Street, an exact date for the trial is yet to be announced.

Speaking to Dublin Live about the plans for the night market, Cllr Declan Meenagh said: "Dublin City Council has markets in several parks, like in St Anne's Park in Clontarf. I think it's really exciting for the area.

"There will be food and groceries and it will just bring a bit of life to that park. It quite busy already and a lot of people go there. It's right next to the Basin. It's a really good idea.

"It's looking like it will be in May. We're still figuring it out."

Cllr Meenagh added the market would be a positive addition to the area which already has an abundance of great local businesses.

He said: "There are lots of great businesses around Phibsborough. We've got Noms, the zero waste food shop, all of the cafes like Bang Bang and Two Boys Brew. There's a lot in the area and I'm sure they'll be delighted to contribute to this.

"To be honest, I would like to see a lot of the parks have markets. I think that there is quite a lot of potential. It's being sensitive to the park. It's temporary, we're not just putting it up full time. I think it will animate it a bit.

"It will be a nice thing for people coming out of work for the weekend. It leaves the park free on Saturday for people."

Fans of weekend markets welcomed the news last week that the Bushy Park Market was returning for its weekly Saturday Markets which take place from March until October.
