New food, drink and shopping destination opens at historic train terminus

A new food, drink and shopping development has just opened on the site of a historic train terminus that was last used in the 1800s. Department Store is set within the old bonded warehouse that was formerly part of the Granada Studios complex.

The mixed-use space will boast a restaurant and bar, which will have all-day dining, as well as outlets for accessories retailer folk Beaches & Cream and the trendy cyclist clothing shop Rapha. There is also space for events, exhibitors and pop-ups, and studios for hire.

It will be open from Monday to Friday, serving breakfast and brunches from 8am, and small plates from 11.30am, while there will also be arts, music and culinary workshops. It follows the recent opening of The Stables, the canteen-style bar and restaurant which is also catering for workers in the area with a restaurant boasting affordable lunches.

Anthony Powell, managing director at Department said: “Department is building a collection of iconic destinations that combine workspace, wellness, and social experiences. The new Department Store does just that.

“It offers the public and Department members a new space for culinary and creative ideas. The setting has been purposefully designed as a fluid venue to drink, dine, relax, and socialise, whilst providing independent retailers the platform to promote their brands.

“We have been focusing on expanding our food and beverage offering in recent months with the launch of The Stables, a casual canteen-style restaurant, and now Department Store. They are both ran by our food and beverage team who have a passion for hospitality, creative concepts and delivering an elevated experience.”

Department Store is currently being accessed via the Department Bonded Warehouse on Lower Byrom Street, by the Science and Industry Museums, but will also be accessed from the soon-to-open Grape Street, which will feature outdoor seating, a lively ambiance, and live music and DJs.

The development is part of what’s now being called Enterprise City, between Quay Street and Liverpool Road. The area, which is being regenerated, will also take in The Factory, home to the Manchester International Festival, and a new arts and cultural centre.
