New figures reveal South Lanarkshire residents pay less council tax than elsewhere in UK

South Lanarkshire residents pay substantially less council tax than in England and Wales.

New figures show that council taxpayers in South Lanarkshire fork out on average £733 less per year than they would in England and £544 less than in Wales.

The figures show that in 2022/23, the average Band D Council Tax bill in Scotland is £1347 compared to £166 in England and £1777 in Wales.

Additionally, the average charge for all property bands, including E, F, G and H, is between £413 and £651 lower in Scotland than England.

After finalising the budget in February, South Lanarkshire Council remains the mainland authority with the lowest council tax rates in Scotland.

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has said the level of local council tax will help families in the “cost of living crisis”.

The average council tax increase in Scotland for 2022/23 was 3.0 percent, compared with 3.5 percent in England and 2.7 percent in Wales.

In South Lanarkshire, the increase was 2.5 percent - well below inflation of 6.2 percent.

MSP Clare Haughey MSP told Lanarkshire Live: “Council taxpayers across Rutherglen and Cambuslang are paying significantly lower than households in Tory-run England or Labour-run Wales – getting the best deal across Great Britain.

“On top of the £150 council tax rebate announced last month by Scotland’s finance secretary, this demonstrates that the Scottish Government is doing all it can within its restricted powers and resources to keep as much money as possible in the pockets of local families.

“With the Tory cost of living crisis hitting hard, keeping council tax rates will help those most in need whilst still being able to invest in local schools, maintain roads, and build new affordable homes.”
