Hospitals across the United States are now mandated to secure written informed consent from patients before conducting pelvic exams and exams of other sensitive areas, particularly when the patient is unconscious. This new guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services specifies that consent is necessary for breast, pelvic, prostate, and rectal exams performed by medical students, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants for educational and training purposes.
