New endometriosis treatment could 'give women hope' say scientists as clinical trial launched

A new clinical trial has been launched by scientists who are researching a potential new treatment for endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition that affects 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth in the UK. Symptoms of the condition can often be debilitating, and as a result have a significant impact on a person's life and mental health.

Those who suffer from endometriosis can experience severe pain, especially during menstrual periods, while fertility problems also may develop for others.

It is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tissue, known as endometriosis lesions, acts as endometrial tissue would — it thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each menstrual cycle which leads to inflammation, pain and the formation of scar tissue.
