New edition of solo Fallout wargame is like a cross between Warhammer and D&D, and it's up for pre-order

A lone Vault Dweller model with a dog model steps out into the Wasteland.

A new and improved edition of the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare wargame is now available to pre-order, and it looks as though it could be a great alternative to the likes of Warhammer if you struggle to get regular games going (or simply don't have time for anything competitive).

Designed as a solo-first wargame, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare builds on "years of insights from the community" for a more streamlined and narrative-heavy experience. However, it can also be played cooperatively or competitively with an opponent controlling your foes. It's available to pre-order via the Modiphius store, and will ship in November 2026.

Prefer a more traditional head-to-head wargame? Modiphius also makes Fallout Factions, which you can pick up for a reduced $81.19 via Amazon instead of the usual $99.99. We came away from our test sessions impressed, and it's a wild ride in Nuka World.

The original Wasteland Warfare dropped almost a decade ago, so this second edition update has been a long time coming (a bit like another fan-favorite that just emerged from hiding - a beloved, long out-of-print Arkham Horror board game is getting a revamp). The press release says that players will emerge from their home settlement to explore a randomized Wasteland, "creating a campaign map of locations and enemies as they move around the map." They can then choose how to handle combat encounters, upgrade their warband, or recruit fresh warriors along the way.

Not that you have to stick with the basics. Alongside the core starter set, you can also pick up packs that include miniatures for other factions like the Brotherhood of Steel or a range of foes from across the Wasteland.

Lead game designer Evie Moriarty (who also oversees the Wolfenstein RPG, complete with an OTT hail Mary system) says that "Fallout: Wasteland Warfare has a new lease of life with this edition, and we've worked hard to make solo and cooperative gaming the focus and better than it ever has been. With a streamlined ruleset, massively expanded campaign rules, and an innovative enemy AI system, we can't wait for you to get to grips with it and let us know about your stories out in the Wasteland."

There aren't many explicitly solo wargames out there in spite of the occasional box set like Kill Team: Exodus or Terror on Devlan, so it feels smart for Modiphius to lean hard on that niche with Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. Actually, I think that's the best thing it could do; the studio has proven time and again that it excels in this area, as shown by Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms. Judging by the fact that the upcoming XCOM game includes an upgradeable base and co-op campaign, this isn't the end of it either.

Fallout: Wasteland Warfare's second edition is aiming to ship in November 2026.

Speaking of fantastical worlds, the designers of MTG Hobbit say that "we've learned a lot from the fan reaction" as they battle dwarves and narrative constraints to create the most faithful adaptation yet.
