New Edinburgh student apartments with terrace overlooking canal set to go ahead

Plans for an Edinburgh scrapyard to be demolished and replaced with student flats with a roof terrace over-looking the Union Canal are set to be given the go-ahead.

The proposals to completely transform the old metal scrapyard and buildings on Yeaman Place, fronting the canal, were submitted in the summer of 2022 and were subject to a site visit and hearing.

Following this, planning officers have said the proposals "broadly" comply with provisions set out in the national planning framework and so it is recommended that the development goes ahead.

The final say lies with councillors who will cast their vote and voice their opinions during a development and sub-committee meeting next Wednesday, March 15.

The plans state that 148 student flats will be built, with some over-looking the Union Canal near Fountain Park. A six-storey block with an upper floor setback is also proposed on the corner of Yeaman Place.

A five-storey block could consume the south west corner of the site adjacent to the Union Canal and two lower buildings are proposed in the centre of the site, being three-storeys in height to reflect a courtyard.

The planning statement adds: "The proposed development will provide new pedestrian and cyclist connections and high-quality public realm. New, level access lanes are proposed linking Dundee Street to the Union Canal, with a central courtyard and a canal square adjacent to the stepped access to Yeaman Place.

"New seating areas, planting, low level lighting and trees will be incorporated sensitively into the overall landscape strategy."
