New Edinburgh images show work on huge cycle route that will transform city centre

Edinburgh Council have released two images showing the progress being made on a cycle route that will ensure safer and more efficient travel across the city centre.

Two new junction layouts at both Roseburn Gardens and West Coates Terrace have been snapped as part of City Centre East to West Links. Both junctions are designed to give priority to pedestrians ahead of traffic turning into each junction.

The council add that the changes have been made with the new Highway Code rules in mind, in which priority is given to pedestrians crossing a junction that a vehicle wishes to turn into.

Previously, pedestrians would have had to wait until the vehicle turns into the junction, but if a car is now switching from one road to another, they no longer have priority.

On the council website, it states: "We have designed these to give priority to anyone walking, wheeling or cycling, in line with recent changes to the Highway Code. Read about changes to the Highway Code.

A new layout has also taken shape at Roseburn Terrace and Roseburn Gardens. (City of Edinburgh Council)

"These are quite new to Edinburgh but have been successfully used elsewhere in the UK and Europe. While we all adjust to this new way of using our roads, please take extra caution and watch out for others moving in either direction."

The Edinburgh West to East Link is designed to make travelling through the capital more accessible for those walking, cycling and wheeling with changes being implemented on some of the city's busiest streets.

The masterplan will eventually connect Roseburn to Leith Walk, through the city centre, with a "safe and direct cycle route that will give more space to anyone walking, wheeling or cycling, as well as linking key transport exchanges, businesses, neighbourhoods and the existing off-road cycle network."

Work on the £19million project officially got underway at the start of the year and is due to be complete around summer 2023. To view latest updates on the CCWEL project, you can do so here.
