New Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa pictured on BBC set in iconic TARDIS for the first time

New Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has been seen on set for the first time while shooting scenes for his highly anticipated Time Lord debut later this year.

Ncuti was pictured emerging from the infamous TARDIS time machine on a snowy Christmas-themed set, after showrunner Russel T Davies announced he had been working on two festive specials.

The Rwandan-Scottish actor – who found fame playing Eric Effiong in Netflix's Sex Education – was seen shooting scenes with Doctor Who’s new companion Millie Gibson, after he was announced as the fifteenth Doctor in May last year.

Ncuti was pictured in a relaxed look with bright trainers, jeans and a brown leather trench coat as the snow fell around him in a snow globe-worthy vista.

The 30-year-old actor was seen emerging from the warm light of the TARDIS police box as well as in other scenes sprinting through a deserted graveyard at night.

The star looked in the zone as he channelled the science-fiction icon on the BBC One show set, in scenes which will hit screens in November 2023 with three Christmas special episodes to coincide with the 60th anniversary – with David Tennant returning as the 14th Doctor.

Last month former Coronation Street star Millie, who is set to play a character called Ruby Sunday, looked at ease on set of the iconic show as she and co-star Jemma filmed scenes at a market during a crisp winter day.

The 18-year-old star, who played Kelly Neelan on the cobbles from 2019 to 2022, wrapped up in a chequered winter coat with fur lining as she braved the cold on set.

Ncuti issued a heartfelt statement when he was first announced as the actor taking over the cult favourite role from Jodie Whittaker.

He said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.

“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger.

“An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”
