New creative lead appointed at Manchester Art Gallery ahead of its 200th year anniversary

A new senior creative lead has been appointed at Manchester Art Gallery to structure the many attractions that bring tourists to the building.

Dr Inbal Livne , a PhD holder in archeology and an ex-assistant curator at both The British Museum and National Museums Scotland, started the role today at Manchester Art Gallery.

The new senior position replaces the shared directorship between Manchester and Whitworth Art Galleries that saw only one director between both attractions.

Dr Livne’s appointment as Senior Creative Lead comes with the gallery’s 200-year anniversary since the founding of the monument in 1823.

Livne graduated from the University of Edinburgh studying archeology before starting her PhD in 2009.

Her work then took her to Kent in 2013 where she worked as Head of Collections and Engagement at Powell-Cotton Museum before moving to Manchester in 2021.

Dr Livne had been in Manchester ever since, working at the John Rylands Library as a Curator in Diversifying Collections.

Her appointment along with refurbishments taking place for the next four years at the gallery, is expected to showcase the potential of the city's art collection and to unite cultures and communities through shared experiences.

Dr Inbal Livne said; "I'm hugely excited to have been given the opportunity to play a central role in the life and history of Manchester Art Gallery.

"The Gallery's ethos of putting people at the centre of everything it does, improving wellbeing, creating communities of care, and providing inclusive access to culture for everyone are values I personally believe in and have championed throughout my career."

"I'm honoured to be entrusted with helping take this mission forward into a new chapter for the gallery and can't wait to get going and to continue the two hundred years' worth of collaboration and innovation that the gallery has already been known for- with the people of Manchester and with our other cultural organisations and partners, both across the city and far beyond."

Councillor Luthfur Rahman OBE, Deputy Leader Manchester City Council, said: "Inbal is going to be great for the gallery, she very much shares our values and her passion for people and for places.

"Telling their stories creatively to as wide an audience as possible is infectious, and exactly what we're looking for as the gallery moves into the next two hundred years."
