New Covid rules in Edinburgh schools as pupils with symptoms 'can still attend'

Children who are showing mild coronavirus symptoms will no longer need to stay home from school.

A letter sent home to parents from National Clinical Director, Jason Leitch, shows that children will no longer need to test or self isolate for Covid-19.

The letter reminds parents that starting from May 1, Scottish Government advice has changed to a more relaxed ‘stay at home’ message rather than strict self isolation.

Stressing that children should only stay off school if they are feeling unwell or have a temperature, they are also encouraged to return as soon as they feel better.

Guidance includes children who have tested positive for Covid-19 but otherwise feel well.

In an attempt to avoid disruption of children's education any further the letter says:

“What this means in practice is that children and young people (those aged 18 and under) with mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough - but who are otherwise well - do not need to stay at home and can continue to attend education settings.

“This guidance differs slightly to that for adults, and reflects the fact that children and young people generally have a higher likelihood than adults of regular instances of respiratory symptoms from non-Covid illnesses.”

Scottish government guidance has now changed and anyone who has tested positive for coronavirus is now under no legal obligation to self isolate.

Instead those who feel unwell with the virus are told to stay at home until they feel well enough to resume regular activities.

Mass test centres are closing and contact tracing will no longer be used to track the virus.

Following mask wearing advice that was lifted at the beginning of April, these new regulations hint to an end to all Covid-19 restrictions.
