Plans for a major extension to Trowell Garden Centre have been given the green light. The popular family-run centre, situated in Stapleford Road, Trowell, was given permission to enlarge its coffee lounge and add a children’s play area by Broxtowe Borough Council at a planning meeting on Wednesday, March 30.
The 1,275 square metre extension will also include a bigger retail space and more canopies to provide plant protection. A similar planning application by the garden centre was rejected in 2019 as it 'constituted inappropriate development within the Green Belt'.
Concerns were again raised as to whether or not the new application constituted appropriate development in the Green Belt. Questions were also raised over the design and appearance of the proposal, as well as the impact on neighbouring amenity and highway safety.

However, Broxtowe Borough Council confirmed that the plans had this time been approved. The new proposal reads: "The benefits of the proposal are that the applicant proposes a major investment which is designed to improve the customer experience of an existing established business in the locality, helping to maintain the long term viability of the business, creating job security for existing staff and creating additional employment opportunities."
