New car park development at MediaCity given green light

Plan for a 162-space car park at MediaCityUK will soon become a reality after approval was granted by Salford council.

Peel Media is looking to start the work on the Broadway site of Mode Wheel Locks in the coming months.

In addition to this they were given outline permission for a 548 space multi-storey car park neighbouring this site (E1 plot). However, a review is to be conducted before that development goes forward.

This is a hybrid planning application comprising two elements, which together will provide for a total of up to 710 car parking spaces.

A spokesperson for MediaCity said: “In terms of the multi storey plans for the E1 plot – there is no immediate plan to develop this multi storey park as it will be a case of reviewing demand for car parking as the ongoing development of MediaCity progresses.

“However, in the interim, the creation of the surface level car park will start in spring and will complete in early 2023.”

The car park will provide 13 electric vehicle charging spaces and three motorcycle parking spaces. A landscaping strip will be provided along the site boundary with Broadway, this area will be mounded and contain trees planting.

The scheme will also include the provision of a footpath, within the site, along the southern side of Broadway. The initial phase of the project will cater to the increased demand for parking at MediaCity as the area becomes more popular.

“There is a pressing need to ensure that Peel Media have sufficient flexibility to accommodate for the current and projected growth of MediaCityUK, both as a major economic hub and increasingly popular residential area,” the Design and Access Statement said.

“Given the need to accord with the maximum parking parameters established under the outline planning permission for MediaCityUK as a whole, a key requirement of the brief was ensuring that parking provision did not exceed 710 spaces.

“To provide enough flexibility and accommodate this redistribution in parking provision, a hybrid application has been proposed.”

Permission was granted by Salford City Council on March 2. Peel says it wants to “double the size of MediaCity”, which CEO Steven Underwood said was the plan going forward following the Landsec acquisition in the latter part of 2021.
