It's no secret we are a nation of dog lovers, but the newest creation by a dog food brand may be taking things a bit too far for most Brits. However those who love the smell of a puppy will be delighted with a new creation - a puppy-scented candle.
The dog food brand, OMNI, created the That Puppy Smell after its survey of 3,000 British dog owners revealed that the majority (88%) love the smell of puppies and half (52%) believe the smell helped them bond with their pet. The candle is said to to evoke puppy memories and support the release of the feel-good hormone oxytocin as well as bringing the much-loved, calming, ‘new puppy’ smell to all Brits.
According to the dog owners, puppies are most likely to smell of sweet milk, popcorn, and biscuits. The limited-edition candle is inspired by these scents, with notes of lavender, a fragrance proven to help people relax and release oxytocin. That Puppy Smell candle will retail at £24.99 and is available to pre-order now on the OMNI website here.

Following the creation of the scent, the dog food brand tested the fragrance on 50 dog owners to discover if it really does smell like puppies. Findings revealed that nearly all (95%) of people stated that the candle ‘reminds them of a puppy’ and the majority (85%) confirmed that the scent brings back happy memories of bonding with their own pet. Scientific research has revealed that the interaction between people and their dogs has been proven to increase levels of oxytocin, a feel-good hormone that also bonds mothers to their babies.
Dr Guy Sandelowsky, vet and co-founder of OMNI, said: "“We often have customer feedback about how much dogs and people love the smell of our food - so we wanted to dig deeper when it comes to scent and how important it is when it comes to bonding with our dogs. There is evidence that familiar scents can trigger memories and that bonding with pets can release oxytocin for owners and dogs. While the idea of enabling your house to smell of dog might sound like someone’s worst nightmare, our survey revealed that dog owners just love the smell of a new puppy."
