NHS Tayside’s under-fire oncology department has recruited a new cancer specialist.
Dr Christopher Merrick is set to join the team at Ninewells Hospital in the near future.
It is hoped his appointment will relieve some pressure on the cancer department that has been criticised in recent months.
Earlier this year, Dundee Live told how NHS Tayside was yet to fill key vacancies for breast cancer specialists.
The health board’s only breast radiotherapy oncologist retired in January while another oncologist who delivers advanced breast oncology services has handed in their notice.
The specialist was recruited in August last year but plans to leave next month.
Dr Merrick specialises in a specific form of high-dose radiotherapy treatment called SABR - and will be working with the colorectal team.
He will also support the University of Dundee in helping develop and deliver the undergraduate medical school curriculum for oncology.
Dr Merrick said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the excellent team of hard-working oncology consultants who have been so valuable and supportive to me throughout my training here in Tayside.
“I’m excited to be involved in helping develop SABR services, providing further treatment options for patients with metastatic disease and will endeavour to offer the best care possible to cancer patients in Tayside.”
